Changes ahead for First Friday Las Vegas

Whirlygig Inc., the nonprofit group that organizes the monthly arts festival now in its seventh year in the Las Vegas Arts District in Downtown Las Vegas, announced today that it will scale back First Friday’s offerings during the summer months in order to ensure the art festival’s future. For the months of June, July, and August the streets will not be closed to traffic for pedestrian activities.

While all participating art galleries, studios, antique and clothing stores, restaurants and bars will remain open from 6 to 10 p.m. on June 5, July 3 and August 7, the outdoor portion of the event on Colorado Street and Casino Center with its artists booths, live music and street performances will be on temporary hiatus due to lack of funding for the event. There will be plenty of visual and performing artists on the sidewalks, and the City of Las Vegas Trolley will be operating its usual route.

The Vegas Artists Guild Spring 2009 Art Show will take place at the
CSN Artspace Gallery beginning May 1 through June 30, 2009, with a reception Saturday, May 9 from 5-7 pm. 30 works of art in different mediums will be shown representing the diverse talents of the members of the Vegas Artists Guild. LVSK8 III

The long awaited third installment of the LVSK8 III show is finally set for June 19th, 2009! Opening reception is 7-10pm @ Henri & Odette gallery, downtown Las Vegas.

LVSK8, the brainchild of local artist Michael Todoran, is a group show where participating artists paint, draw, carve, or build on blank skate decks to be hung for your viewing pleasure. This is set to be the best show yet, and it’s officially sponsored by Art Renegades!

The Las Vegas Art Museum, soon after a much debated move to Neonopolis and a successful “L.A. Show”, has shut it’s doors and quietly fizzled out. Las Vegas is now one of the largest metropolitan areas without an Art museum, something new to add to our growing list of accolades.

Dr. Sketchy’s Life Drawing – December

Dr. Sketchy’s Las Vegas

Dr. Sketchy’s is a life/figure drawing session with a twist. Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School is the little New York art event that has become an international movement. Started in 2005 by artist & burlesque dancer Molly Crabapple, the concept is simple… Artists draw glamorous burlesque dancers and performance artists, compete in contests, and win wacky prizes. Oh yeah, there’s booze too. From its humble beginnings in Brooklyn, Dr. Sketchy’s now has over 40 branches from Hollywood to Helsinki, including London, Rome, Tokyo, Berlin, Melbourne, and now Las Vegas! Dr. Sketchy’s will cure you of every boring art class you’ve ever been to. The common view on life-drawing classes involves a silent room, a bored model, and no liquor in sight. At Dr. Sketchy’s it’s different.

The December session is scheduled for Saturday the 20th from 2pm-5pm @ The Thunderbird Lounge located inside The Aruba Hotel and Spa. Located at 1215 Las Vegas Blvd South.

The models for December are Babes in Sin Burlesque . Babes in Sin Burlesque has been on the Las Vegas burlesque scene since 2004. They stay true to the vintage style of burlesque…thier motto is “All Tease no Sleaze”. Members: Penny Slots, Cha Cha Velour, Sue Nami Sake, Ivy L’Vine and Vita Vixen will warm you up during this cold December session of Dr. Sketchy’s.

Your host for this session will be Leda Swann. Leda is a local singer and burlesque fan. This girl has a song bird’s voice and can be heard often singing at Dino’s Lounge.

This special session of Dr. Sketchy’s is their Christmas party! Ugly Christmas sweaters are encouraged. Worst (best!) sweater will win a special prize. There will be Hoilday goodies to eat (please feel free to bring something to share too), a Christmas tree, and maybe even a special visit from Santa. And what’s a tree without presents? If you would like to participate in a gift exchange just bring a wraped gift, don’t spend more then $5. All those who show up with a gift can participate in the gift exchange. If you choose not to participate that’s OK too.

Admission is $5, payable at the door. There will be no reserve seating, so please come early to catch a good seat and a table. All dry media is allowed. Nothing messy! If you can spill and and it makes a mess you will not be allowed to use it. There will be pads of paper and sketching materials availabe for a small price. We will be allowing a few photographers. But you need to contact Dr. Sketchy’s Las Vegas ahead of time to reserve a spot. There will be contests and prizes! Prizes provided by Calo Style Clothing, Dr. Sketchy’s Las Vegas, and The Thunderbird Lounge. The bar will be having drink specials….did someone say 2 for1?
